2G Network Shutdown Impact To Fleets

Posted 11/01/16

Many of today’s telematics systems relay the valuable information your fleet needs, by using a cellular connection. Recently, many of the major telecom providers have given notice they are performing a 2G network shutdown in favor of more advanced and faster technologies, including 4G LTE.

AT&T has stated they are shutting down their 2G network completely, by December 31st 2016, with Verizon not far behind. Verizon said they will be shutting down their 2G network by 2019.

So, how does this impact your fleet? Most telematics or M2M equipment use 3G today. However if your company is using telematics equipment or other M2M hardware, it is a good idea to check with your provider to verify that you are on 3G or 4G LTE.

Plan ahead! The future is approaching swiftly. Are you ready?
